Knee Pain
Manipulation Under Anesthesia, or M. U. A., is a treatment system used to improve soft tissue movement. M. U. A. is used in cases of arthrofibrotic knee joints and in other neck and back problems. This treatment system allows for deeper physical manipulation of knee joints than can be undertaken when the patient is conscious. It is mostly used in post operative knee surgery instances. The procedure usually takes about 20 minutes and can give more range of movement for the patient.
Aetna considers MUA medically necessary for the following indications:
A. Arthrofibrosis of knee following total knee arthroplasty, knee surgery, or fracture
B. Chronic, refractory frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
C. Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ).
